A Day in the Studio: Sand & Gold Leaf

Production days in the studio begin at sunrise. Morning light provides the most color-accurate environment to mix pigments and apply gold leaf details. Our primary tools aren’t just fine brushes, but palette knives, plaster trowels, and raw organic materials like sand and gesso.

A painting often takes 4 to 6 separate layers to achieve the desired texture depth. Each layer must dry completely before the next is applied. This slow, deliberate process is almost meditative. Once the base textures are set, Hessa carefully lays gold leaf highlights onto selected crevices. These elements catch light as the day changes, making the artwork feel alive.
